A paper plan of website pages with coloured pencils

Affordable website design in London fails when the first meeting is about a colour and the last meeting discovers there is nowhere for the services to live. The look is the easy part to debate. The page list is the part that decides whether a stranger can find the offer and contact you.

This is a different question from the price itself. The figures are in the cost guide and in what affordable web design includes. Here the subject is the order of work: pages, then words, then the visual design that makes those pages readable.

Decide the pages first

List the services that should bring enquiries. Give each one a working title and the next step you want: a call, a form, or a booking. Add contact. Add about if there is a real person or team to describe. Add a shop only if you take orders. Everything else waits.

That list is the design. A starter build has room for up to five of those pages at £150. A business build has room for fifteen at £295. If the list is longer than the package, either cut pages that repeat each other or move up a package. Do not squeeze six services onto one scrolling homepage and call it a saving.

What the homepage is allowed to do

The homepage introduces the business, names the area of London you cover, and links to each service by its real name. It can show one true proof point. It should not contain the full text of every service. When it does, Google is handed one URL for many searches, and the visitor has to scroll to find the sentence they came for.

London homepages often try to list twenty boroughs in the first screen. A short, true coverage line is better. The long list can live further down, or on the service pages, in sentences. A paragraph that is only place names does not explain the work.

Pages that can rank on their own

Write each service page as if the visitor never saw the homepage. Open with the offer and where you do it. Say what is included, how to start, and what you do not do if that prevents the wrong enquiry. Link to contact. Link to one guide if it helps the same customer decide.

Two services people search for separately need two URLs. Two names for the same job can share a page. This is also how you avoid a pile of near-copies, which we describe in service-area pages versus one homepage. Affordable design has no budget for pages that exist only to repeat each other.

Where the visual design belongs

Once the outline exists, the visual job is contrast, type size, and an obvious button. A fashionable illustration that hides the phone number has failed. Photographs should be of your work where you have them. Compressed images keep the first screen fast. Speed is part of the design on a London commute, not a technical extra.

The menu should use customer words. “Services” is fine if the items are the actual services. A menu of “solutions” hides a local business from the people who searched for it. Our website design starts from that menu, not from a theme demo.

How you know it worked

After launch, look at enquiries and at the queries in Search Console. A design that looks current and never shows the phone number will not change the calls. A design that names the service in the title, answers it on the page, and links onward has a fair chance. If you are replacing an old site, keep or redirect the URLs that already get visits. That handover is part of the design, and it is also what a redesign is for when the current site is the problem.

Send the page list before you send a mood board. We will tell you which package matches it.

Frequently asked questions

Should website design start with a logo?

Use the logo you already have. Agree the pages before the layout, or the homepage becomes a poster with nowhere to send people.

How many pages does a London service business need?

Often five to twelve: home, each core service, about, and contact. Add a guide only when you can answer a real question.

Can an affordable design still look specific?

Yes. Specific comes from your services, photos, and area, not from a large number of visual effects.
